Chuck Connors Person was born in Brantly, Alabama, and attended Brantly High School. Person enrolled at Auburn University in 1982 and would be a four-year letterman with the basketball program.

Person was named after Chuck Connors, a former NBA and MLB player, and actor. Connors was best known for his role in ABC’s The Rifleman. Person would be nicknamed The Rifleman, which he carried throughout his career.

During his Auburn career, Person would help lead the Tigers to the program’s first three NCAA Tournament appearances. The last of those three appearances in 1986 would be the team’s best, making the Elite Eight. Auburn would win the SEC Tournament in 1985 with Person earning tournament MVP honors.

Person holds multiple records at Auburn, including being the top career scorer. He was named All-American in 1985 and 1986 and a three-time First-Team All-SEC selection.

The Indiana Pacers drafted Person #4 overall in the 1986 NBA Draft. He would spend 14 years in the NBA across five franchises before retiring in 2000. After his playing days, Person joined the Cleveland Cavaliers coaching staff. He would coach for three other NBA teams – including the Lakers – and spend two years with a Korean basketball team before joining Auburn’s staff in 2014.

Bruce Pearl hired Person to his first coaching staff at Auburn. In 2015, Person was announced as associate head coach.

While at Auburn, Person was arrested on September 25, 2017, on bribery charges in connection to a corruption scandal that spanned multiple schools across the country and an executive employee at Adidas. Person was accused of paying two players actively on the Auburn roster and receiving financial gains for steering student-athletes to specific financial advisors.

Person pled guilty but would avoid time in prison.
